CARDO, in partnership with the Cardiff Commitment team and Cardiff West Community High School, has begun a construction-focused programme for Year 10 Engineering students, encouraging young people to pursue future careers in construction.
Designed to bridge classroom learning with practical industry exposure, the initiative inspires young learners by providing invaluable insights into the construction sector.
Running from January until the end of the academic year, the programme aligns with key themes of a typical construction project lifecycle, ensuring students gain both knowledge and hands-on experience. The curriculum covers:
- Health & Safety Awareness: Introducing critical industry standards such as COSHH, PPE protocols, and risk assessments.
- Skill Development: Enhancing teamwork, communication, and technical abilities, alongside exploring innovative design methods.
- Career Pathways: Providing guidance on roles and opportunities within the construction industry, delivered by industry professionals.
- Project Finalisation: Covering snagging, maintenance, finishing techniques, and the handover process.
So far, the programme has engaged 20 students, with 100% of participants reporting they learned something new.
Cardo has a long-standing partnership with The Cardiff Commitment which is Cardiff Council’s initiative that works with external partners to support and engage young people into the world of work.
Gareth Macarthy, Social Value Officer for the Cardiff Commitment Team said: “The career and work-related experiences that Cardo continues to offer young people in Cardiff West High School, and their cluster primary schools, are vital for student success and development in securing a positive post-16 destination.
“This engagement provides young people with an introduction into the unknown world of work, ask questions, and develop relationships, at the earliest possible moments in their educational journey.”
Rhydian James, Managing Director at Cardo, said: “We’re thrilled to see the enthusiasm and growth among the students participating in this programme. By offering real-world experiences, we aim to not only equip them with industry-relevant skills but also ignite a passion for construction that could shape their future careers.
“Social value is at the heart of everything we do at Cardo, and inspiring young people is a vital part of our mission. Programmes like this not only help students discover their potential but also contribute to building a skilled, motivated workforce for the future.”
