SKATERS in Cardiff will soon have a new ‘destination’ skate park to enjoy.
Work on the approximately 1,000m2 skatepark next door to Eastern Leisure Centre in Llanrumney is scheduled to begin before Christmas.
Designed by award winning consultants VDZ+A and Newline Skateparks in consultation with the local skateboard community, the new skatepark features a series of ramps, hips, curbs, ledges and rails as well as a quarter pipe and will be suitable for all ages and abilities.
Built from concrete, the new skatepark will provide a higher quality, more inclusive, lower maintenance and lower noise facility than the existing timber-framed skatepark it replaces.
A Cardiff Council spokesperson, said: “This will be a fantastic facility for Cardiff’s vibrant skate community and the second skatepark built as part of our skateboard strategy, which aims to help this Olympic sport continue to thrive here.”
“We want as many people as possible to take part in physical activity and the great thing about skateboarding is that, as well as being relatively low cost to get involved in, it also appeals to people of all ages – from young children and teenagers, to older skaters, some of who are now introducing their own kids to the sport.”
Wider improvements to the area are also planned alongside the skatepark, including: new wildflower planting, trees, and shrub planting, while ‘rain gardens’ will provide sustainable drainage for the site. New lighting will also be installed.
