A 74-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault after a dramatic incident on the A48 in Cardiff, where a man was seen clinging to the bonnet of a moving car. The unusual sight caused a stir among drivers on the dual carriageway, with many witnesses shocked by the scene.
The event occurred around 2:50 pm on Wednesday on the westbound side of the A48 near St David’s Catholic College in Penylan. A witness, travelling eastbound, described doing a “triple take” as they struggled to believe what they were witnessing. They reported that a man was hanging onto the bonnet of a slow-moving car, which also had a broken windscreen.
The witness immediately reported the incident to the police, who confirmed they had received “numerous calls” regarding the alarming situation. The dashcam footage from the witness, which captures the incident, can be viewed above.
A spokesperson for South Wales Police stated: “At around 2:45 pm yesterday, police in Cardiff were called to an incident on the westbound carriageway of the A48 approaching the University Hospital of Wales following a report of a man holding onto the front of a car as it travelled along the road. The 74-year-old male driver of the car was arrested on suspicion of assault and is currently at Cardiff Bay police station. The matter remains under investigation.”
The incident has prompted ongoing police inquiries as authorities seek to determine the circumstances leading up to the event on one of Cardiff’s busiest roads.
