A DOG walker sustained serious injuries in a collision in Newport on Monday morning (Jan 13). The incident, which occurred at 6:35am on Rowan Way in the Malpas area, involved a silver Volkswagen Passat and a pedestrian. Eyewitnesses reported that the woman was trapped under the vehicle.
Gwent Police stated that the occupants of the car had left the scene before officers arrived. The woman, who was walking her dog at the time, was taken to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries. However, an update from police on Monday afternoon confirmed that she is now in a stable condition. The dog also sustained injuries, but the extent of these is not yet clear.
A police spokesperson said: “We received a report of a road traffic collision in Rowan Way, Newport, at around 6:35am on Monday, January 13. Officers attended along with personnel from the Welsh Ambulance Service, Welsh Air Ambulance, and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. The collision involved a silver Volkswagen Passat and a pedestrian. The pedestrian, a woman, has been taken to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries. The occupants of the car reportedly left the scene prior to police attendance.”

South Wales Fire and Rescue confirmed they were called at 6:24am and dispatched crews from Malpas and Cwmbran to assist. A crane was used to lift the car, and the scene was handed over to police.
Newport Bus announced that its 19 service is unable to serve Rowan Way until further notice due to the road closure.
