Illegal rave disrupts former industrial site in Pontypool

AN ILLEGAL rave has taken over a disused industrial site near Talywain, Pontypool, causing significant disruption in the early hours of Wednesday, January 1.

Gwent Police responded to reports of loud music echoing from ‘The British,’ one of southeast Wales’ largest derelict industrial sites, located close to the Big Pit National Coal Museum.

Officers remain at the scene and have urged members of the public to avoid the area. The site has been disconnected from its power supply, and a Section 63 notice has been issued, ordering attendees to leave immediately.

Superintendent Stephen Drayton said: “Using our existing powers, and prioritising the safety of those attending unlicensed music events and the surrounding community, officers are authorised to shut down the event, seize equipment, and prosecute organisers.

“Power to the site has been cut, and a Section 63 notice has been served to those present, directing them to leave. Raves of this nature pose significant risks to attendees, disrupt local residents, and will not be tolerated.”

He added: “As our officers continue to manage the situation and attendees begin to disperse, we ask the wider community to avoid the area to prevent further traffic congestion.”

The police operation is ongoing, and updates will follow as the situation develops.
