POLICING teams will be stepping up patrols in nightlife hotspots across South Wales this winter to combat crime and anti-social behaviour (ASB) during the festive season.
Uniformed and plain-clothed officers from South Wales Police will be on duty in towns and cities, including Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot, Bridgend, and Cardiff. Their focus will be on monitoring and addressing alcohol-related ASB and other crimes as part of the force’s Project Pinpoint campaign.
South Wales Police is encouraging residents to report ASB concerns, emphasizing that such reports enable them to take appropriate action. Responses can range from arranging diversionary activities and public education to increasing resources in affected areas or implementing enforcement measures.
Targeting repeat offenders
Repeat ASB offenders may face Community Protection Notices (CPNs). These notices will be issued if it is demonstrated that their behaviour has a persistent, unreasonable, and detrimental impact on the quality of life in their communities.
Winter initiatives across South Wales
This winter, additional targeted operations include:
- Cardiff: The Street Engagement Team will address issues of rough sleeping, homelessness, street begging, and drug and alcohol misuse. Individuals will be directed to housing, substance misuse, and mental health services.
- Swansea, Neath, and Port Talbot: Operation Advent will focus on raising awareness of shoplifting at Fforestfach Shopping Centre, with increased patrols during opening hours.
- Rhondda Cynon Taf: A Crime Prevention Roadshow in Llwynypia will offer advice to shoppers on safeguarding their purchases from theft.
- Swansea’s Wind Street: Police Sergeant James Ponting will oversee an enhanced uniformed police presence every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday night until New Year’s Eve. Plain-clothed specialist officers will also patrol the city centre, focusing on identifying and intervening in concerning behaviour towards women.
Sergeant Ponting’s message
Sergeant Ponting emphasized the importance of these measures to ensure a safe and enjoyable festive period:
“The Christmas and New Year period is a busy time in our towns and cities as people enjoy drinks with friends, colleagues, and family.
“However, some individuals take things too far, engaging in behaviour that negatively impacts communities, including those enjoying a night out and those working in the hospitality and emergency services sectors.
“We want to send a clear message: crime and anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated.
“As part of Project Pinpoint, we urge everyone to report ASB concerns online, via 101, or by calling 999 in emergencies. Every report helps us address issues appropriately.”
This winter initiative highlights South Wales Police’s commitment to ensuring public safety and tackling disruptive behaviour in the lead-up to Christmas and the New Year.
