Industry Minister met CEOs in Port Talbot to boost regional investment

INDUSTRY Minister Sarah Jones visited Port Talbot yesterday (November 25) to host a high-level roundtable with CEOs from across UK industry, as part of the government’s efforts to attract investment to the region.

The meeting included representatives from organisations such as Associated British Ports (ABP) and RWE, with discussions focusing on addressing barriers to investment and exploring incentives for development. This initiative aligned with the government’s pledge to support steelmaking communities, particularly as Tata Steel transitions to greener steel production methods.

Government Commitment to Steel Communities
Minister Jones emphasised the government’s dedication to Port Talbot, stating:
“This government is committed to Port Talbot. By holding roundtables like these, we’re making the most of the area’s potential to help secure new, good jobs.

“We’re listening to industry and local steelmaking communities, ensuring their views are reflected in our upcoming Steel Strategy which will be backed by up to £2.5 billion of investment.”

The Steel Strategy, set to launch in Spring 2025, aims to ensure a sustainable future for steel-producing regions, with the government actively addressing the challenges faced by such communities.

Support for Local Businesses
The roundtable followed the Welsh Secretary’s announcement of £13 million in funding to assist those affected by Tata Steel’s transition. The funds are designed to support local businesses, help establish new enterprises, and create employment opportunities in the region.

Engagement with Industry Leaders
The roundtable brought together 11 CEOs, including:

  • Rebecca Evans MS, Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, Welsh Government
  • Frances O’Brien, CEO, Neath Port Talbot Council
  • Luciana Ciubotariu, CEO, Celtic Freeport
  • Henrik Pederson, CEO, ABP Port Talbot
  • Richard Little, Director, Pembroke Net Zero Centre, RWE

On-Site Visits Explored Investment Opportunities
After the meeting, Minister Jones visited ABP Port Talbot and the proposed site for the Celtic Freeport to discuss further investment opportunities. She also toured Tata Steel’s Port Talbot plant, met with CEO Rajesh Nair, and discussed the company’s transition to electric arc furnace steelmaking with workers on-site.

This collaborative effort highlighted the government’s resolve to revitalise Port Talbot’s economy while steering it toward a greener and more sustainable future.
