THE COLLEGE Merthyr Tydfil has received a St David Award nomination for its dedication to ensuring every learner achieves their full potential.
First Minister of Wales, Eluned Morgan, announced the finalists earlier this month with The Inspire Team at The College Merthyr Tydfil nominated in the Public Services category.
The award is given to an individual or team who have gone the extra mile to provide an exceptional service to the people of Wales.
The Inspire team recently won the ‘Learners’ Engagement in School/College’ award at the Welsh Professional Teaching Awards. This is a new category that recognises a school or college that has demonstrated an excellent approach to help improve learner engagement and attendance.
The average attendance at The College Merthyr Tydfil for this academic year to date is 91.0%, up from 90.4% over the same period in the 2023/24 academic year.
The Inspire team were recognised for the work that they have done to support learners at risk of becoming disengaged in their studies and dropping out of education – resulting in an impressive 94% learner completion rate for the learners they supported during 2023-2024.
Learners describe the team as helping them feel safe and making a huge difference to their lives.
Rhian Francis, Head of Wellbeing and Learner Support Services at the college, said: “We are over the moon to receive a nomination for such a prestigious award.
“The team have worked so hard to put a variety of interventions in place to remove barriers to learning, improve academic performance, personal and social development, life skills and increase attendance.”
Lisa Thomas, Principal and CEO of The College Merthyr Tydfil, stated: “Being nominated for this award showcases the hard work and dedication of our incredible staff who deserve the recognition.
“As a college we are delighted and I’m super proud of the team.”
All winners will receive a St David Awards trophy, designed and made by a leading Welsh artist. The awards ceremony will take place on Thursday March 27 at the Senedd.
