MERTHYR TYDFIL COUNCIL has provided an update on the Nant Morlais sinkhole as of Wednesday (Dec 4).
The culvert inspection has been completed, and no further issues have been detected within the structure. The collapse has been confirmed as localised to the sinkhole’s immediate area.
To manage the situation, a dam has been constructed on the Nant Morlais stream. Pumping of water from the inlet to the outlet is set to begin, with visible pipework expected along the route. Pant Road has been reduced to a single lane to accommodate this work, with two-way traffic lights in place to regulate the flow of vehicles.
Encouragingly, the sinkhole has not grown in size since Tuesday (Dec 3).
Efforts are ongoing to collaborate with utility companies to establish temporary services, which would allow some displaced residents to return to their homes. The council anticipates sharing further updates tomorrow.
Residents are advised that the pelican crossing near Pantysgallog Primary School remains accessible from the northside. Work continues to reopen the pedestrian footpaths to ensure full access in the area.
The council thanks the community for their patience and cooperation during these critical repairs.
