TWO ash trees posing a risk to a wall off a main road in Chepstow are to be chopped down to stump level.

The trees in the grounds of Ashfield House belong to Monmouthshire County Council and its planning department has approved an application to remove them to stump level.

Its application stated the larger tree is showing signs of ash dieback disease and likely to be affecting the retaining wall alongside Bulwark Road while the smaller tree beside it is described as a “scrubby regrowth” that is badly degraded with some decay around the root bowl with roots encroaching into the retaining wall foundations.

Both trees had been subject to preservation orders.

Ashfield House is at the junction of Bulwark Road with the A48 Hardwick Hill and Mount Pleasant.
