Council Leader calls for action regarding Inglis Bridge

MONMOUTHSHIRE County Council’s Leader, Cllr Mary Ann Brocklesby, has written to the Ministry of Defence and The Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association for Wales regarding the recent closure of Inglis Bridge.

The letter expresses growing frustration among residents and calls for the necessary work to be completed promptly to reopen the bridge.

Inglis Bridge is a crucial right of way for many residents, connecting them to the town of Monmouth. Cllr Brocklesby has expressed the council’s disappointment with the lack of progress in restoring access for walkers and cyclists, urging the relevant authorities to provide information concerning any forthcoming plans.

Cllr Brocklesby stated: “As a council, we empathise with residents who have seen this well-used route within the town closed, with no updates on its reopening. I assure our residents that the council is doing everything possible to work with the Ministry of Defence to ensure the bridge is reopened as soon as possible for the community.”

“This popular and essential walking and wheeling route is used daily by residents heading to work, school, or local businesses. The closure is significantly impacting the local community.”

Monmouthshire County Council will also support Monmouth Town Council in assisting residents during this period.

In her comments about the closure, the council leader would like to remind residents that barriers have been placed for their safety, urging everyone not to climb over or break through them.

Cllr Brocklesby added, “Although the current situation is far from ideal, and the closure results in a longer walking or wheeling route for residents, I urge everyone to stay safe. Recently, we have witnessed individuals breaking through the barriers to walk on the bridge. The bridge is closed for your safety, and we implore people not to endanger themselves or others.”
