PLANS to build housing on the site of a former Neath Port Talbot primary school have been given the go-ahead by the local council.

The long-term proposals, which were handed in to the authority by developers at Asbri planning in August of 2022, could now see 10 residential properties built on the former Gwaun-cae-Gurwen primary school located on Water Street.

If taken forward they would be built on the brownfield site located near the centre of the village that is said to be approximately 0.35 hectares in size, where the old school buildings have previously been demolished.

Plans say the completed houses would all be semi-detached with six containing three bedrooms and four containing four bedrooms, along with driveways and a new access road off Water Street.

The plans read: “The proposal is for full planning permission for residential development and associated works at land formerly Gwaun-cae-Gurwen Primary School, Neath Port Talbot.

“The proposed site plan illustrates for 10 dwellings with the existing access retained off Water Street. The dwellings are oriented as six semi-detached dwellings fronting Water Street and a further four semi-detached dwellings located to the rear of the site.”

They add that the site, which is currently made up of hard-standing and overgrown shrubbery, is also close to a number of public facilities such as convenience stores,  bus stops, Cwmgors Rugby Club, and Gwaun-cae-Gurwen Community Clinic.

The development was approved by Neath Port Talbot Council officers in January of 2025 as part of their delegated decisions, and could now see construction of the properties begin over the coming months.
