Neath man sentenced for severing man’s finger in Swansea City Centre incident

NEATH resident Dexter Smith, 39, was sentenced to three years in prison at Swansea Crown Court on Friday (Nov 1) for grievous bodily harm and affray.

Smith, who has previous convictions for battery in 2008 and 2013, went on a “violent rampage” in the centre of Swansea at 7:30pm on August 9

Captured on CCTV, in broad daylight, Smith approached a group of men outside an Italian restaurant, slapping the complainant on the back and saying “you’re all little b****es and f***ing bastards.”

Smith used a chair as a weapon and managed to sever part of the complainant’s finger in the process.

Judge Geraint Walters remarked, “what you did afterwards demonstrates you were completely berserk. You chased your original victim, weaving in and out of vehicles. You further assaulted a food-delivery man by punching him forcefully in the face. You then attacked a car sitting at the lights with people inside.”

In a victim impact statement read by Judge Geraint Walters, the complainant said “I’m so mentally affected by what’s happened. I feel ashamed to be seen and am suffering with nightmares. I don’t feel I can move on and be happy with my future.”

The defence, Steven Burnell, argued that Smith has eight children in total which would be negatively impacted by their father’s imprisonment. He also noted that Smith has been out of trouble since 2013 and has shown remorse for the incident.

Despite this, Smith was sentenced to 3 years for grievous bodily harm and 16 months concurrent for affray.
