NEWPORT inflicted a first defeat of the season on Aberavon whilst also earning their first win on Sunday (Oct 30).

Aberavon went in to the game with six wins from six and were confident of picking up another win to extend their lead at the top of the table.

However, it was Newport who took the lead early on with a try from Cameron Lewis that was converted by Will Reed.

Aberavon responded with a penalty from Aled Thomas and that was followed by a Newport penalty, scored by Reed, to take the score to 10-3.

Newport continued to attack and they soon had their second try which was scored by Kyle Taylor and converted by Reed.

The visitors were down but not out and a try from Ashton Evans and conversion from Thomas brought the score back to 17-10.

That’s how it stayed until half time but both sides knew that the game was far from over.

The first score of the second half went the way of Newport as Ben Roach went over for the try and Reed added the extras to make it 24-10.

Reed then added a penalty for the Black and Ambers but Aberavon hit back with an unconverted try from Evans.

Man of the match Reed then added a further penalty to take the score to 30-15.

Aberavon had the final say as Joe Tomalin went over for another unconverted try but it wasn’t enough to take them to within losing bonus point territory.

It meant an excellent 30-20 win for the Black and Ambers who will now aim to push themselves up the Indigo Premiership table.

Their next match takes place on Saturday, November 12, and sees them travel to Carmarthen Quins. Aberavon will look to get back to winning ways in their next game, on Friday, November 11, which sees them host Ebbw Vale.
