Police incident closes Newport city centre roads

SEVERAL roads in Newport have been closed off since the early hours of the morning due to a police incident.

Police have been on the scene near the Cenotaph since around 2.20am this morning (Mar 31), in what is described as a police incident.

Gwent Police have asked motorists to find alternative routes this morning.

All roads to the Cenotaph in the city centre are closed.

Clarence Place has been blocked off, with a cordon in place, and all roads from every approach are blocked off.

The roads that are currently closed are Chepstow Road, Caerleon Road and Clarence Place.

It is reported that parts of the pavement have been marked off for evidence and items are strewn across the road.

On their Facebook page, Gwent Police said: “ Roads closed due to a police incident, Chepstow road, Caerleon road and Clarence place near to the Cenotaph, please take alternative routes for your journey.”

Bus services in the area have been diverted.

Taking to twitter this morning, the bus company said: “The following diversions are in place. All Caerleon Road Services will operate via Heidenheim Drive to M4 roundabout in both directions.

“All Chepstow Road services will operate via George Street Bridge both directions.”

Gwent Police have been asked to comment.

The incident is ongoing, more to follow.
