Police seek man in fraud investigation

Newport scam involved suspects posing as police

OFFICERS investigating a fraud case are trying to identify a man captured in CCTV footage who may have information that could assist their inquiries.

A couple in Newport fell victim to the scam after receiving multiple phone calls from a group posing as police officers. The fraudsters falsely claimed that criminals were attempting to withdraw money from the couple’s account.

To “assist the investigation” and “keep their money safe,” the victims were instructed to withdraw a large sum of cash, which was later collected by an unknown individual.

Police are now appealing for help in identifying a man who was in the area at the time. He was seen on Yewberry Lane, Newport, at around 4:50pm on Thursday, January 30.

He was wearing a black coat with the hood up, black bottoms, black and white trainers, and a face mask.

Anyone who recognises the man or has information is urged to contact police via the website, social media, or by calling 101, quoting log reference 2500038276.
