AN EXTENSION to the time of cremation services, a decrease in the cost of unattended cremations, and an increase the cost of additional chapel hire and burial services are being proposed for a crematorium in Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) next year.

Fees and charges at Llwydcoed Crematorium have been reviewed taking into account a prolonged period of rising cost pressures and also the aim to continue to provide a comprehensive range of quality services at affordable and competitive prices, a report for the Llwydcoed Crematorium joint committee said.

The outcome of the review is a proposed 5% standard increase to fees and charges alongside three areas that are proposed to be subject to specific treatments.

The report said that the review process and proposals are consistent with that applied and being proposed for bereavement services provided by Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council for the 2025-26 financial year.

It proposed to increase the current “cremation service time” from 45 minutes to 60 minutes per service following engagement with local funeral directors to better support proceedings for those in attendance.

To reflect the extended service time it is proposed the cremation fee is increased from £854 to £1,050 with sufficient cremation capacity being maintained to meet demand.

The report said that the proposal would also remain competitive with neighbouring crematoria based on a 60-minute cremation service duration.

Based on a price review and local demand it is proposed that the price of a direct cremation, which is an unattended cremation, is reduced from £672 to £500, this being more in line with neighbouring provision and Llwydcoed Crematorium having available capacity to undertake additional direct cremations, the report said.

The current charge for additional chapel hire and a burial service at Llwydcoed Crematorium does not reflect the costs incurred in making available the provision in terms of utility and staff costs, the report said.

Therefore it is proposed the hire charge is revised from £146 to £250 thereby increasing the contribution to the cost of providing the service.

The estimated overall impact of these proposals is an additional income of £66,000 in a full year.
