Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf resigns

THE MAYOR of Rhondda Cynon Taf has resigned from the role with a new mayor set to serve for the rest of the council year.

The council confirmed Councillor Dan Owen Jones tendered his resignation as mayor of the local authority for personal reasons on Monday, February 10.

It also confirmed he has resigned from bodies he represented as a local authority representative and he has been suspended from the council’s Labour group.

In a statement the council said: “Cllr Dan Owen Jones tendered his resignation as mayor of the local authority for personal reasons on Monday, February 10. The member has also taken the personal decision to resigned from bodies he was appointed to as a local authority representative.

“We can confirm that Cllr Dan Owen Jones has been suspended from the council’s Labour group.

“The council cannot comment further on this matter at this stage”

Councillor Sheryl Evans of Labour was elected mayor for the rest of 2024-25 at a full council meeting on Wednesday, February 12.

Cllr Evans, who represents Aberaman on the council, was previously deputy mayor and the new deputy mayor for the rest of the 2024-25 year will be Councillor Emma Watts (Labour) with Councillor Cathy Lisles, Independent, having also been nominated.

On being elected mayor Cllr Sheryl Evans said: “It is both an immense privilege and honour to be here today to accept the role of mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council.

“Having previously served as deputy mayor I fully appreciate the responsibility and significance this role carries and will do the utmost to serve the community to the best of my ability for the benefit of our residents.

“It is a special honour to represent the county borough where I was born, raised, and have had the privilege of serving as the local councillor for Aberaman for over 10 years.”
