Remembering Nathan McGrath: A marathon for Heart Health Awareness

RHONDDA, husband, father, and loyal friend,  tragically passed away at 33-years-old in October 2023 due to a sudden cardiac arrest at home. Known for his energetic and athletic lifestyle, Nathan McGrath was a regular participant in sports and marathons, including a 26 mile run for Macmillan Cancer Support in 2023. As a devoted husband and a loving father to two sons, Alfie and Isaac, he cherished spending time with his family, often taking them on memorable trips. His sudden passing left a profound impact on all who knew and loved him.

In response to this personal tragedy, Nathan’s wife, Jessica McGrath, will run the Cardiff Half Marathon on Sunday (Oct 6) in his memory. The Cardiff Half Marathon is set to bring together thousands of runners, each with their own motivations and causes. For Jessica, this is more than a physical challenge, it is a chance to give back, to make a difference, and to keep Nathan’s memory alive in a meaningful way. Every step she takes on that day will be a testament to the love she has for her husband and her family, as well as a contribution to the broader fight against heart disease.

This marathon holds deep personal meaning for Jessica, as it is not only in honour of her husband but also for their two young sons. Jessica hopes to protect their future by supporting research that could ensure their own cardiac health.

Heart conditions in young people are often stigmatised or overlooked. They are less likely to be discussed, diagnosed, or researched compared to conditions affecting older populations. Nathan, like many others, was unaware of his underlying heart condition, and his sudden death has motivated his family to advocate for more attention to be given to cardiac health in younger individuals.

How You Can Help: Supporting Jessica and the British Heart Foundation

For those who would like to contribute, Jessica has set up a GoFundMe page where donations can be made easily and securely. Every contribution will go toward funding research led by the British Heart Foundation. Jessica’s goal is to raise £1,000, and as of now, she has raised £682. She is calling on friends, family, and anyone who feels moved by Nathan’s story to contribute to this cause. No donation is too small, each pound brings us closer to preventing heart disease and helping save lives.

In Jessica’s words, “If we can help save someone else’s life, then that’s what Nath would want us to do.”

Nathan’s family will forever be changed by his passing, but through this marathon and the generous support of those who contribute, they hope to help others avoid such heartbreak.

Let’s come together to honour Nathan McGrath’s legacy and support the vital work being done to save lives. Click Here to visit the GoFundMe page.
