ROAD maintenance, flood alleviation, parks, play areas and leisure centres are among the things Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) looks set to spend an extra £16m on next year.
As part of the council’s three year capital programme, it is due to set aside an extra £16.05m in 2025/2026 for several areas which also include the Park and Dare Theatre in Treorchy, highways structures, multi-use games areas, skate parks and war memorials.
This is over and above the normal capital programme, representing a one-off investment.
It includes a specific allocation of £1.5 million for a maintenance programme at the Park and Dare Theatre in Treorchy in a bid to future-proof the venue.
This £16.05m investment includes:

- £6.57m for highways maintenance
- £200,000 for unadopted roads
- £3.5m for highways structures
- £500,000 for flood alleviation
- £250,000 for parks structures improvements
- £1.5m for parks and green spaces
- £350,000 for skate parks
- £400,000 for play areas
- £230,000 for multi use games areas (MUGAs)
- £1.5m for the Park and Dare Theatre,
- £500,000 for leisure centres
- £50,000 for war memorials
- £500,000 for capital programme pipeline development.
These would be funded from the council’s investment and infrastructure fund but also through the use of the Local Government Borrowing Initiative Highways funding.
There would be £7.13m left in the investment/infrastructure reserve to fund future priorities, the report said.
The council has kept this investment/Infrastructure reserve for a number of years to fund the cost of maintaining and enhancing infrastructure across the county borough.
The three year capital programme as a whole includes £225m between 2025/2026 and 2027/2028.
This is made up of a core capital programme of £46.7m over the next three years, alongside external grant funding and the use of specific council reserves that have already been allocated.
