Treorchy banking hub set to open in permanent home

CASH ACCESS UK, the organisation set up to protect nationwide access to cash, has confirmed the new banking hub in Treorchy will be opening in a permanent home inside the Co-op on Station Road soon.

While works are underway to install the new hub, the temporary hub currently located in the former Barclays building will be relocating to Treorchy Library to provide continued access to cash and banking services.

Banking hubs offer a counter service operated by the Post Office, where customers of all major banks can carry out regular cash transactions, Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. There is also a Community Banker service where customers can talk to their own bank about more complicated issues on the day their bank is in the hub. The hub in Co-op will occupy currently unused space and there will be a private meeting room where customers can speak to their bank representatives.

Community Bankers are available on the following days:

  • Monday: NatWest
  • Tuesday: HSBC
  • Wednesday: Santander
  • Thursday: Lloyds
  • Friday: Barclays

Finding a site with long-term availability that satisfies the necessary criteria including size, condition and location can take several months. We are delighted to have reached an agreement with Co-op to use this space which meets all accessibility requirements, offers free parking* and is only a short distance from the high street.

While this search was ongoing, a hub was opened at a temporary location in the former Barclays building on Bute Street. Due to the lease on this location ending, the hub will be moving temporarily to the library while necessary work is being carried out on the permanent site in the Co-op. The current hub in the former Barclays will close at 5pm on Wednesday 19 February and the new temporary hub will open in the library at 9am on Tuesday 25 February.

There are nine hubs now open in Wales with two more hubs planned for Flint and Monmouth.

Gareth Oakley, CEO at Cash Access UK: “I’m happy to announce that the hub in Treorchy will be opening in a permanent home inside the local Co-op, ensuring crucial access to cash and face-to-face banking services continues for residents and businesses across the community.

“Customers can visit on any day of the week for their everyday banking transactions and if you have a specific or more complex enquiry for your bank, a Community Banker will be there to help on the day they’re in the hub. A big thanks to Co-op for allowing us to take over the unused space in their premises.”

Mark Matthews, Director of Format and Innovation, Co-op, said: “At the very heart of our approach is convenience. Our stores are more than just a shop, they are a community hub combining great quality products, value and deals with community participation and a range of added services.
