Tonmawr edge past Quins in Division 3 Cup

TONMAWR earned their second win of the Division 3 Cup on Saturday (Oct 29) as they beat Pembroke Dock Quins 15-12 in a close contest.

The early exchanges belonged to the Quins, and they really should have scored a few tries in the opening quarter, with the ball not going to hand or wrong options being taken.

The game dragged on with neither side looking like crossing the whitewash. It took until the last minute of the half when Tonmawr mauled the Quins over their own line for a try for Hooker Ben Baker-Rees which went unconverted.

It did not take long for Tonmawr to add to their total, just five minutes into the second half No8 Wes Brown scored a close range try wide out which also went unconverted.

With a 0-10 lead for the visitors, things looked ominous for the Quins, but on the hour mark the Quins hit back with two tries in the space of five minutes, both scored by Right Wing Sam (Rasher) James.

The first came after a superb break out by Centre Geriant Powell, whose kick ahead was chased down brilliantly by the Right Wing after twice kicking on and a superb pick sent him diving over in the corner, he took the conversion himself which went narrowly wide.

The Quins were suddenly back in it when James grabbed his second try after a determined run down the right flank, before touching down behind the posts, he converted himself to put the Quins 12-10 in front.

Tonmawr came back strongly, and spurned two resonably easy penalty attempts as they went for their third try which duly arrived when Ben Baker-Rees forced his way over for another unconverted try with 10 minutes to go.

The Quins, despite a determined effort, could not muster a score which would have won the contest.

Teams now take a mini break as the autumn internationals begin.
