A KIND-HEARTED schoolgirl has raised £1,500 for the Wales Air Ambulance by hiking Pen y Fan in memory of her dad.
Amelia Millett lost her dad Adam, 26, following a car accident, when she was aged four. The Wales Air Ambulance airlifted Adam to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff following the collision, but later passed away.
In memory of her dad, Amelia put on her walking shoes and hiked the highest peak in South Wales, which is situated in the Brecon Beacons National Park.
Amelia, from Pontypool, who has been described as ‘kind with a caring heart’, was supported by her proud friends and family during her fundraiser.
Amelia’s proud mother Tiffany said: “Amelia did the big walk! It was hard, but we did it! When we were halfway up the mountain the Wales Air Ambulance flew past us and that gave us a massive push to get to the top.”
This was 12-year-old Amelia’s first fundraiser for the Charity, and she smashed her fundraising target of £250 by so far raising £1,500.
Since Adam died his family have supported the Wales Air Ambulance and to date have raised around £40,000 for the Charity.
Wales Air Ambulance is a consultant-led service, taking hospital-standard treatments to the patient and if required, transferring them directly to the most appropriate hospital for their illness or injury.
It is delivered via a unique Third Sector and Public Sector partnership. The Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS) supplies highly skilled NHS consultants and critical care practitioners who work on board the charity’s vehicles.
Tiffany added: “As a family we are immensely proud of Amelia. She has been through so much losing her dad at the age of four. The family has always raised money for the Wales Air Ambulance, but Amelia wanted to do this for herself.
“The Wales Air Ambulance was called out to her dad, and they honestly were amazing and tried everything to keep him here. There aren’t enough words to describe the help they give to people, and they should definitely get more recognition for their work.
“Having a 12-year-old deciding she wanted to walk Pen-Y-Fan in memory of her dad is something I found very special.”
The Wales Air Ambulance Charity needs to raise £11.2 million every year to keep the helicopters in the air and its rapid response vehicles on the road.
Amelia, who attends Abersychan Comprehensive School, and has two sisters and a little brother, completed the hike up Pen y Fan on Sunday 4 August.
Abi Pearce, Regional Fundraising Manger for the Wales Air Ambulance, said: “Congratulations to Amelia for completing her hike up Pen y Fan. What a special girl Amelia is, despite what she has been through she wanted to raise funds for the Charity that tried to save her dad’s life. Since Adam’s passing, his family has raised an incredible £40,000 for our cause, which is incredible. At just 12-years-old Amelia wanted to fundraise in memory of her dad, which is so touching and a lovely tribute.
“Thank you to everyone who has supported Amelia in this fundraiser, she has raised a fantastic £1,500 for the Wales Air Ambulance. Fundraisers, like Amelia’s, will help us to keep our helicopters in the air and our rapid response vehicles on the roads across Wales. Thank you so much for supporting the Wales Air Ambulance.”
