Penarth charity supporters help mark 80th anniversary of Christian Aid with fundraising concert

THE ORGANISATION was founded in 1945 to give aid to refugees in Europe after World War Two. Since then it has provided humanitarian relief and long-term development support to marginalised communities worldwide, while highlighting suffering, tackling injustice and championing people’s rights.

Christian Aid works alongside local partners, providing practical help in times of crisis and beyond. It seeks to eradicate extreme poverty by tackling its root causes, and sharing and distributing power.

Supporters around the UK are marking the 80th milestone by sharing stories and organising services and events.

The Penarth Christian Aid Group is hosting its charity concert, featuring the Canton Rugby Football Club Male Voice Choir, on Wednesday, March 12, at All Saints Church, All Saints Square, Penarth, from 7pm.

Organiser Jeremy Dix said the Canton Choir was formed in 1993 and its main function is to raise money for charity.

He explained: “Over the years it has raised tens of thousands of pounds for various charitable causes. Besides performing concerts the members also sing at weddings, funerals and entertain at nursing homes particularly near the Christmas season. They have also toured many parts of Wales, Scotland, England and recently did a third tour of Ireland.

“Their repertoire covers a range of musical genres including classical, pop, spirituals, hymns (in both Welsh and English) and songs from musicals. The choir is also often supported by a soloist.

“Conductor Les Collins is a retired teacher and known in the area for his choral direction. He is very ably supported by accompanist Monica Roblin who was head of music at Fitzalan High School and a graduate of the College of Music and Drama, in Cardiff.”

The money raised at the concert will support Christian Aid’s local partners around the world. Last year (2024), the charity worked with 260 partners to reach 4.5 million people via hundreds of projects, from savings and loans associations to farming co-operatives, and climate disaster risk training to healthcare schemes.

Tickets for the concert can be bought from any of the churches in Penarth or from Griffin Books, Windsor Road, Penarth.
