GLOBAL, the media giant behind popular radio brands like Heart and Capital, has announced plans to close its Wrexham studio as part of a new “nations strategy.” The restructuring will see the consolidation of operations, reducing regional studios and programming.
The Gwersyllt-based studio, which once housed Marcher Sound and later Heart, is currently operated by Capital. However, it has been earmarked for closure. According to RadioToday, the changes will merge Capital North and Capital South into one national show, and a similar merger will occur for Heart’s north and south editions. Only a single studio in South Wales will remain operational under this plan.

Concerns over Welsh-language broadcasting
The announcement has sparked concerns about the future of commercial broadcasting in Wales, particularly for Welsh-language content. Llyr Gruffydd MS raised the issue earlier this week, seeking clarity on the implications of Global’s decision.
He highlighted the closure of Capital Cymru’s regional output, which uniquely provides daytime programming through the medium of Welsh. Gruffydd warned of significant consequences, stating:
“This is an end to Welsh-medium commercial broadcasting in north Wales and a blow not only for the Welsh language but also for the Welsh music sector. The closure of the Wrexham studio will result in the loss of 12 jobs, but the broader implications for culture and community are far-reaching.”

The move marks a significant shift in the landscape of commercial radio in Wales, reducing opportunities for regional voices and Welsh-language representation.
