FC Halifax Town vs Wrexham AFC Match Preview

Match: FC Halifax Town vs Wrexham AFC

Venue: The Shay

Date: Tuesday 23rd November – 7.45pm KO

Competition: Vanarama National League

Wrexham travel to West Yorkshire this evening to face Halifax Town in their National League fixture, kicking off at 7:45pm. Wrexham sit 9th in the league, 6 points behind opponents Halifax who are 5th as it stands. The Red Dragons have a game in hand over the three teams that sit above them in the league, so a win against the Shayman could see them shift up to 7th temporarily.

The Dragons performance in the league so far has been solid to say the least – but with big ambitions from their new owners (you know who they are, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney), the Dragons will be keen in getting a victory over a side in great form.

Form Guide

Halifax themselves are in great form, and it won’t be so easy for Wrexham to score goals for fun. The Shayman have only lost 1 of their last 13 games in all competitions – with a 1-0 Solihull Moors being the exception. Halifax Town have only conceded 12 goals so far this season as well, and haven’t conceded more than 1 goal in a league game since a 3-2 win over Notts County on the 5th October.

Wrexham drew their last game 0-0 against Wealdstone – but previously beat King’s Lynn Town 6-2 as well as putting 5 past Aldershot Town in a 5-0 thrashing, which sees their total goals scored standing at 29. Their last loss in the league came against Maidenhead on the 26th of October.

Head to Head

The last time these two teams met back in April 2021, Wrexham came away with all 3 points via 4-0 victory – which also happened away from home at The Shay. In that game, Jordan Davies bagged a hattrick whilst Dior Angus got the other goal.

In the last 8 games in which Wrexham and Halifax have met though, there have been 4 draws, 2 Wrexham wins and 2 Halifax wins – so the past gives us no clear indication of what might happen.

Players to watch

Halifax’s Billy Waters has got himself 10 goals in 15 games played – making him the leagues 4th top scorer at the moment. The 27 year old has been vital in Halifax’s run of form, and will be looking to punish Wrexham with the help of the home crowd.

Wrexham’s Paul Mullin is just below Waters in the ranks, with 8 goals in 12 games in the league making him the 5th top scorer. Their strike rate is almost identical too, with both players having 0.68 goals per 90. Mullins has a slightly better minute per goal record though, by 1 minute exactly – 132 compared to Waters’ 133.

Referee

Martin Woods is in charge of the game at The Shay.

Fan Prediction

It’s difficult to call a winner in a game that involves a strong Welsh team taking on in-form Halifax – but I think the last few games gives me confidence in giving Wrexham the edge. They will have to dig deep away from home and although they won’t benefit from their passionate home support, I’m certain the travelling supporters will give it everything. Factoring in the Red Dragons ability to score a flurry of goals in a short space of time, I’ll go with FC Halifax Town 2-3 Wrexham AFC.
