Dafen miss chance to overtake rivals

Llanelli Herald Issue 26

kevin1South Wales Association Division One: Llandysul 210-7 beat Dafen 120 a/o by 81 runs

DAFEN failed to capitalise on Llanelli’s abandonment as they fell to a crushing defeat away to Llandysul to leave their remote title hopes in tatters as they rely on the results of others.

Having won the toss and elected to bat Llandysul set a challenging total of 201, although this was restricted largely thanks to the wicket taking prowess of all-rounder Kelvin Bartle, who claimed four wickets including those of the chief run-scorers Barry Thomas (33), Ben Edkins (55) and Andrew Edwards (39), to thwart the hosts momentum.

Chris Hudson and Phillip George also took a wicket apiece, and Dafen having successfully chased and won in their previous two games will have been confident of getting the runs required to continue their title charge.

This confidence will have been ended in the first two overs as they were reduced to 1-2 with the loss of Matthew Evans and Dafydd Nicholas for 0. This became 16-3 when Nicky Davies departed for 4, but Kelvin Bartle settled the ship, and in doing so put in a case for the man of the match award, as he hit a calming 38 from 72 balls when chaos ensued around him.

Jamie Mansel got the only other score of note as he struck 30 not out, including five boundaries, but it wasn’t to be for Dafen as eight batsmen departed for just 22 runs between them, ending as they did on 120, some 81 runs short of the target set them.

For the hosts Ifan Thomas was in fine form with the ball taking 4-22 from his 10.1 overs, whilst there were two wickets each for Ieaun Paske and Iestyn Evans.

Dafen will hope to bounce back this weekend as they host mid-table Gowerton.
