Ammanford man to face Crown Court trial over alleged online child sex offence

A 50-YEAR-OLD man from Ammanford has appeared before Llanelli Magistrates’ Court accused of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.

Barry Davies, of Pontardulais Road, Tycroes, is charged with seeking sexual gratification by communicating with an individual he believed to be under the age of 16 during a period between August and September 2021.

The court heard allegations that Davies solicited photographs of the complainant’s body and breasts, requested video calls during which he intended to expose himself, and sent an explicit image. It was stated that the communication took place online, where Davies reportedly initiated contact and maintained the exchanges with the intent of grooming.

Due to the seriousness of the allegations, magistrates decided the case should proceed to Swansea Crown Court for trial. The next hearing is scheduled for January 20, 2025. Davies was granted unconditional bail while awaiting trial.

Davies was represented in court by Fenn Richards, while the Crown Prosecution Service’s case was presented by Nia James. Legal professionals emphasised the importance of handling such cases with sensitivity and ensuring justice is served.

If found guilty, Davies could face a significant prison sentence. The case sheds light on the growing problem of online child exploitation, an issue that law enforcement agencies and child protection organisations are working tirelessly to combat.

Authorities have reiterated the importance of vigilance in online spaces, urging parents and guardians to monitor digital activity and educate children about online safety.
