CARMARTHENSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL has launched a consultation for Carmarthen Town, aimed at developing a wider range of travel options to make it easier and more affordable to access employment, education, retail and other services, and, in doing so, aiding the town centre’s post covid recovery and decarbonisation.
Improved Active Travel options in Carmarthen will improve road safety, traffic congestion, air quality and local connections between communities. These improved travel options will also aim to increase footfall in the town centre by encouraging more people to travel around the town for longer periods of time.
The consultation will inform the further development of an Active Travel master plan, that is aimed at making it easier for people to walk and cycle around the town by providing safe and affordable transport options. This is an opportunity for Carmarthenshire residents to get involved in order to help shape these future plans.
This work is fully funded by Welsh Government and aligns with the objectives set out in Llwybr Newydd: The Wales Transport Strategy, aiming to improve Active Travel linkages to give people more options on how they travel. In turn, this will support the Wellbeing Objectives set out in the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act to promote a prosperous, healthy, globally responsible and equal society.
The views of residents, service users, commuters and business owners are being sought to maximise the benefit of this exercise for the whole community. Feedback from this consultation will be progressed through specific feasibility studies in line with Welsh Transport Appraisal Guidance.
The ‘Active Travel Carmarthen’ public consultation will run for 6 weeks, from Monday, February 20, to Sunday, April 2.
There will be four community drop-in events to view proposals, give feedback and ask questions held at Carmarthen Enterprise Hwb, 4 St Catherine’s Walk, Carmarthen, SA31 1GA on the following dates:
Event 1 Tuesday, March 14 at 10am – 4pm
Event 2 Wednesday, March 15 10am – 4pm
Event 3 Tuesday, March 21 10am – 4pm
Event 4 Wednesday, March 22 10am – 4pm
Cabinet Member for Transport, Waste and Infrastructure Services, Cllr. Edward Thomas said: “We want to make Carmarthenshire an attractive, cleaner, and safer place to live and work in; for today and future generations.
“The Welsh Government has set out clear objectives and investment priorities to improve active travel within communities. This support will help us to access targeted infrastructure investment that will make it easier for people to use services in and around Carmarthen cheaply and sustainably.
“I would encourage everyone to have their say on the Active Travel Carmarthen consultation, as we want people’s input to determine how the Council can support and encourage active travel within Carmarthen that will be to the benefit of the town as a whole.”
