Defendant granted bail ahead of Carmarthenshire assault trial

THREE men have pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnap, wounding with intent, and unlawful wounding following an alleged assault in Carmarthenshire earlier this year.

The defendants—Mohammad Comrie, 22, from Leeds; Faiz Shah, 22, from Bradford; and Elijah Ogunnubi-Sime, 20, from Wallington—were arrested on Monday (Aug 26), the day of the alleged incident, and have remained in custody since. Their trial is scheduled to begin on Monday (Feb 17), 2025, at Swansea Crown Court.

During a hearing at Swansea Crown Court on Friday (Nov 29), bail was granted to Ogunnubi-Sime. His defence counsel, Mr Irfan-Arif, highlighted his client’s lack of prior convictions, good character, stable family support, and ongoing education. Written confirmation from Ogunnubi-Sime’s mother assured the court of suitable accommodation and her backing of the bail application.

The prosecution, led by Mr Murphy, suggested the alleged assault might have been motivated by religious or financial factors. Evidence cited includes fingerprints found at the scene, a group chat allegedly used to plan the incident, and the complainant’s identification of Ogunnubi-Sime.

Despite the prosecution’s arguments, His Honour Judge Huw Rees granted bail under strict conditions. Ogunnubi-Sime must adhere to a curfew between 7:00am and 6:00pm, monitored electronically, and is prohibited from entering Wales except for court appearances.

The case will proceed to trial in February 2025.
