THE M4 is one of the most travelled motorways in the country.
From Pont Abraham in the west to Chiswick in the east, on average 130,000 people use the motorway on a daily basis.
Now, thanks to a Freedom of Information request from Moneybarn, the stretches where you’re most likely to get fined for speeding have been revealed and it’s not really a surprise.
South Wales Police revealed the most fined stretches of motorways in their jurisdiction, with the M4 Port Talbot Westbound’s camera by far the most common place to be caught speeding, with 5,225 fines in 2019-2020.
The second most common place? Port Talbot Eastbound with 1,921 fines recorded during the same period of time.
Tim Schwarz, Head of Marketing at Moneybarn says: “Speeding cameras, although seen as inconvenient by drivers, are an important piece of equipment that saves lives.
“The maximum fine for speeding on a motorway is £2,500, and if you’re travelling at more than 100mph, you could face being banned for life, unless you can prove there were mitigating circumstances, such as an emergency.
“For smart motorways, where the speed limit is variable, the cameras can catch you driving above 70mph even when the variable limits aren’t in place, so we advise motorists to always be vigilant of their speed to avoid facing a penalty.
“Speeding anywhere is extremely dangerous, but on a motorway, the consequences can be devastating. That’s why the minute your car hits 71mph, you could face a fine.”
