Two rescued by firefighters from quicksand incident on Llanelli beach

UP to forty emergency service personnel were involved in a major multi-agency rescue operation at Llanelli Beach on Wednesday (April 21).

A young girl aged 3-4, and an adult family member aged 70, understood to be the girl’s grandfather, got stuck in quicksand on the beach and after some time emergency services were made aware of the two casualties in distress.

Police were first on the scene, and they called the Fire Brigade for assistance. Initial attempts to gain access to the two stranded individuals were hampered by bollards blocking vehicle access to the beach.

A witness at the scene said that “although the Fire Brigade had keys to the bollards, they turned out to be the wrong set.”

The alarm was raised around 2pm, the man and girl have now been safely extracted from the quicksand and were assessed by emergency services.

Specialist Coastguard Mud Rescue Teams from Burry Port and Llansteffan were also involved in the rescue.
