Hendy celebrates the grand opening of Canolfan Gwili with local performances and distinguished guests

ON SEPTEMBER 14th 2024, Llanedi Community Council proudly unveiled Canolfan Gwili & Cegin  Beca, its new community centre & cafe, in a grand opening ceremony that celebrated local talent  and notable figures. The event highlighted Llanedi community council’s commitment to  enhancing community engagement and support. 

The ribbon-cutting was performed by Llanedi Community Council’s Chairman Geraint Jones, who  delivered a compelling speech about the centre’s Journey to this point, the thanks given to various  people and providing a space for community activities. Several Llanedi Community Councillors  were also present, including Mike Nicholas, Byron Evans, Stuart Evans, Gordon Wellington,  Berrian Davies, and Gareth Thomas, who also served as the event’s MC. Their attendance  highlighted the collaborative effort in bringing Canolfan Gwili to fruition. 

The celebration was further enhanced by the presence of esteemed guests, including Welsh rugby  stars Josh Adams and Aaron Shingler, Robert Croft MBE and marathon runner Alaw Evans. Guests  praised Canolfan Gwili as a great space and benefits it brings to the community. Madi Thomas, the newest recipient of the Terry Price Award, was also present, we wish Madi the  best of luck in her promising sporting career. Previous winners include Josh Adams and Alaw  Evans.  

Local performers contributed significantly to the event: 

  • Adele O’Neill opened the performances with her exceptional vocal talents
  • Scarlets Choir delivered moving and powerful renditions, enhancing the event’s  atmosphere
  • Gildas, the Welsh vocalist, captivated the audience with his dynamic musical style
  • Kelly Gililand provided a powerful and emotive performance
  • Paul Llewelyn brought a memorable local touch with his act

The community turned out in great numbers to enjoy the centre’s activities. Highlights included  Cochyn, the Scarlets mascot, a variety of pictures showcasing the centre and our nature trail, Fitter Body Ladies (FBL) showcased their new ladies-only gym located downstairs, a children’s  craft table, various craft stalls, and engaging activities with Actif SirGar. Children were delighted  by the excellent interactions with Crazy Clayton and the Clever Cubs Club.
