NHS Charity buys £5,000 blood gas analyser for hospital

Thanks to local donations, Hywel Dda Health Charities has purchased a £5,000 blood gas analyser for Glangwili Hospital for use by respiratory nurses.

The equipment is used in clinics, with hospital patients and also out in the Carmarthenshire community by the three-strong Respiratory Nurse Team.

Respiratory Clinical Nurse Specialist Marian Davies (pictured) said: “This is a great piece of equipment which enables us to monitor the carbon dioxide levels of patients by taking a sample of blood from the ear lobe, which is much less invasive than doing blood tests.

“It is more comfortable for the patient and it also saves them having to make multiple visits to see different teams. We can feed back results straight away.”

Nicola Llewelyn, Head of Hywel Dda Health Charities, the official charity of Hywel Dda University Health Board, said: “The support of our local communities enables us to provide services over and above what the NHS can provide in the three counties of Hywel Dda and we are extremely grateful for every donation we receive.”
