School Street introduced at Morfa School, Llanelli

A ‘SCHOOL STREET’ is being introduced outside Morfa School in Llanelli which will be operational from Monday, February 6.

The School Street will improve road safety in the vicinity of the school, encourage walking and cycling to and from the school, and improve the local environment for those attending the school and for local residents.

The initiative at Morfa School is part of an area wide Welsh Government Road Safety Grant funded scheme that is being implemented in South Llanelli.

The ‘School Street’ will introduce a part-time prohibition on motorised traffic on Olive Street and Bowen Terrace during school opening and closing times (Monday to Friday, between 8:30am to 9:10am and 2:40pm to 3:20pm, during school term times only).  Residents living within restricted streets will have an exemption.

The prohibition will be enforced through the use of permanent cameras, situated at each entry point of the ‘School Street’ zone, and will operate via Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR).

Cllr. Edward Thomas, Cabinet Member for, Cabinet Member for Transport, Waste, and Infrastructure Services said: ‘The new School Street will result in a safer, healthier and more pleasant environment for everyone attending the school and for local residents and will encourage more active travel to and from school’.
