STUDENTS from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) BA Acting and BA Set Design & Production courses are looking forward to performing their stage production of ‘Oh, What a Lovely War!’
Held at the Halliwell Theatre on UWTSD’s Carmarthen campus, with performances on November 22nd, 23rd, 29th, and 30th, ‘Oh, What a Lovely War!’ is a powerful production that combines satire, music, and visual storytelling to examine the brutal realities of war through an unexpected lens of optimism and propaganda. The production will be directed by Samantha Alice Jones and Matthew Holmquist.
Samantha said: “We feel it is important to be telling this story now more than ever. Our version of ‘Oh, What a Lovely War!’ is an unapologetic exploration and retelling of Joan Littlewood’s epic 1963 version, merging the horrors of WW1 with more contemporary experiences and observations of war across the globe. Using circus, clown & comedy, the cast bring this story to life in ways you wouldn’t expect!”
The production uses humour and popular songs to highlight the tragic futility of war, and UWTSD’s rendition builds on this by addressing conflicts through the 20th and 21st centuries, drawing attention to the relentless cycle of war and its financial motivations. This innovative interpretation combines historical reflection with a contemporary outlook, examining the pervasive, often cyclical nature of global conflicts.
Students have been working on the production as part of their major project. This opportunity is a chance for the students to have a taste of what it’s like to work within the theatre industry by working with other creative students outside their course, to showcase their vocational skills, to network and to create an impression to employ in front of industry professionals.
This production highlights the exceptional talents of UWTSD’s Acting students, who will bring humour, poignancy, and depth to the stage, alongside the Set Design & Production team, whose immersive design will transport audiences across time and space, capturing the lasting impact of wartime propaganda and the realities of the battlefield.
Gabby Roberts, third-year BA Set Design & Production student said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed working on this production, it has been both interesting and enjoyable to work with professional directors and to see the play come together from start to finish.
“I personally have been very fortunate in my role as Marketing Officer and Assistant Stage Manager as I have managed to dip into multiple departments, and I have enjoyed each aspect of the production.”
UWTSD’s BA Acting Programme Manager, Seren Vickers added: “The Level 6 students have been working passionately and tirelessly to bring to life this unforgettable play. ‘Oh What A Lovely War!’ is an epic theatrical journey.
“Full of songs, satire, politics, and pain; Joan Littlewood’s masterpiece speaks to times past and present. Come and celebrate the students’ and their many talents as they perform in the first of their final year shows. This is not one to miss.”
UWTSD’s BA Set Design & Production Co-Programme Manager, Stacey-Jo Atkinson said: “It has been a joy to see our final year Set Design and Production students work alongside the acting students, Matthew and Sam to design and create a wonderful show.”
With dynamic direction, visually striking set design, and authentic musical performances, UWTSD’s ‘Oh, What a Lovely War!’ promises to be a memorable, thought-provoking experience for all.
