ON WEDNESDAY, December 14, the brand new Ysgol Gorslas building was officially opened by Council Leader, Cllr Darren Price.
The new school building is located in the picturesque surroundings of Gorslas Park and has a capacity to welcome and provide Welsh medium education for 210 pupils, between the ages of 4 and 11 years of age.
Pupils, staff and the wider community will enjoy the state-of-the-art facilities at the newly built school, which include a car park, sports pitch and a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA).
This brand-new facility was delivered at a cost of £6.8 million and was jointly funded by the Welsh Government, through its Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme, and by Carmarthenshire County Council’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme.
The construction of the new school was undertaken by Lloyd & Gravell Ltd. Ysgol Gorslas occupied the new building at the beginning of the new school year, September 7.
Gareth Morgans, Director of Carmarthenshire County Council’s Education and Children’s Services Department said: “There was a clear need for a new building for Ysgol Gorslas, the challenges to pupils and staff were evident every time I visited the old building.
“This new brand-new building, however, is amazing. It is a wonderful place for our staff and our learners to have a wonderful experience.
“Another important aspect of delivering this new school building is the community element. It’s for the community, and I am sure that the community will benefit from using the building and the playground after school hours.
“I would also like to thank Carmarthenshire County Council for their investment, in partnership with the Welsh Government, into this project.”
Cabinet Member for Education and Welsh Language Cllr Glynog Davies said: “This new development is a wonderful resource for the whole of the community. The village of Gorslas and the neighbourhood will benefit from this building.
“They deserved a new school which is befitting of the 21st century and, I can tell you, that everybody will be happy in this new environment.”
