Cwmamman denied win by last-gasp Dragons goal

CWMAMMAN United’s survival campaign took a blow when Baglan Dragons equalised with virtually the last kick of the match to deny Cwm a vital 3 points on Tuesday, April 4.

It had been a hugely competitive match with Cwm having one of their best first halves of the season. They pressed successfully while winning many of the 50-50 balls and it resulted in a Baglan side who came into the match on the back of 5 league wins and a draw being clearly unsettled.

Cwm had gone in 1-0 up through a typical Calem Rees opportunist goal in the 44th minute and it could have been one or two more during the half as Cwm with Ross Morgan, Charlie Davies and Gwion Howell dominant in the midfield saw Kyle Ashford, Kieran Richards and Rees all coming close.

The second half was a different affair though as Baglan pushed constantly forward in search of an equaliser and Ronan Templeton and Leon Croucher in the centre defence came through well under immense pressure with Ethan Taylor and Rhys Griffiths who had been outstanding launching attacks in the first half now spending the majority of their time defending.

Baglan wasted a couple of golden chances and Cwm were now relying on counter attacks. Kai Rees returning from injury made a couple of excellent saves and as the Cwm faithful agonisingly counted down the seconds it looked like Cwm had seen it through.

However, one final attack in the 96th minute saw the ball moved wide and a cross came over the Cwm defence and Baglan substitute Nathan Lewis nodded in to their great delight and Cwm’s absolute despair. There was just enough time left to kick off.

Huge disappointment for Paul Lewis and his Cwm players but a spirited display and they will be looking to see these games through as they now enter the final 7 games run in to the conclusion of the Ardal South West League and hopefully survival.

The Dragons also beat Cwmamman 6-0 on Saturday, April 8, a defeat which leaves them seven points above the bottom two but having played a few games more than their rivals.

Cwmamman’s next fixture sees them take on AFC Llwydcoed on Tuesday, April 11.
