Drovers edge Ponty to stay second in table

LLANDOVERY scored a late penalty to seal a one-point win over Pontypridd in the Indigo Premiership on Saturday (Feb 11) in a thrilling game.

Pontypridd started well and had three penalties scored by Jamie Murphy, his third an excellent effort from a long way out, giving the visitors a 9-0 lead.

The Drovers hit back in the 25th minute though as they scored the game’s first try through Craig Thomas and Jack Maynard added the extras to bring the score to 7-9

On the stroke of half time Maynard landed a penalty to give the Drovers a single point lead going into the interval.

Murphy added his fourth penalty early in the second half but the Drovers responded well as Lee Rees touched the ball down before Maynard added the extra two points.

That made it 17-12 but there was still plenty of time left to play.

With an hour gone Ponty took the lead as Niko Matawalu peeled off the base of a rolling maul before crashing over in the corner. Murphy then added the extras from the touchline to make it 17-19.

Maynard then scored a penalty in the 63rd minute to edge the home side ahead.

That would prove to be the end of the scoring, despite the best efforts of both sides.

The win for Llandovery keeps them second in the table, seven points off leaders Cardiff with a game in hand, while Pontypridd picked up a losing bonus point to move up to ninth place.

Llandovery are in action again on Saturday, February 18, when they visit RGC. Pontypridd are next in action on February 24 when they travel to Merthyr, with kick off in that game at 7:30pm.
