November 10 / 11

Gathering the Graves / 7.00pm-10.00pm

Much is known of the great events of the Great War; the battles,  the suffering and sacrifice that millions endured in the “war to end all wars.”

Amongst the memorials to the conflict are the immaculate British war cemeteries found across all zones of conflict. The work to recover the bodies of the Fallen and create these resting places was fraught with danger; from unexploded ordnance on the former battlefields to the gruesome work of identifying the corpses and the psychological trauma endured by the men of the Graves Registration Parties, many of whom suffered from what we now know to be post-traumatic stress disorder, but who chose to remain amongst their dead comrades rather than face the terrors of adapting to civilian life.

From the 21st Century perspective it is surprising to learn of the initial opposition to a policy of burying all ranks, classes and creeds together in uniform graves and cemeteries on or near to the battlefields.

There was a huge groundswell of emotion from the British people; many of whom felt that their right to choose how to mourn had seemingly been taken from them.

But, out of this division evolved a sense of national unity that continues after a century, and through the great memorials and simple cemeteries that rose from the killing grounds and encapsulated in one beautifully simple idea that gave focus to a nation’s, and empire’s, grief and desire to mourn.

In his film Bob Phillips sets out to tell this forgotten story through the lives of two cousins from Pembrokeshire who went to fight, and of their loved ones who asked the question:

“After war, what then?”

A question still tragically relevant today.

The HaverHub Bar will be open from 6.30 – 10pm during this event.
