JESSICA BENTING, 35, of Ardwyn House, Llandrindod Wells, appeared at Llanelli Magistrates’ Court on 3rd September 2024, facing multiple charges, including the assault of two police officers. The incidents occurred on 2nd September 2024 in Ammanford, where Benting allegedly assaulted emergency workers in the line of duty.
Benting is charged with two counts of assault by beating an emergency worker, contrary to Section 39 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988 and Section 1 of the Assaults on Emergency Workers (Offences) Act 2018. She is accused of assaulting Acting Police Sergeant Brecon Jordan and PC Phil Stephens, both of whom were performing their official duties at the time of the incident.
In addition to the assault charges, Benting also faces an accusation of obstructing a constable in the execution of his duty, an offence contrary to Section 89(2) of the Police Act 1996. During her initial hearing, she pleaded not guilty to this charge.
Magistrates Mrs H Meade, Mr C Jones, and Mr P Casey presided over the hearing, with Matt Ridler representing Benting’s defence and Sian Vaughan prosecuting on behalf of CPS Wales (South West). Due to the seriousness of the charges, Benting’s case has been committed to Swansea Crown Court for trial.
Benting was granted conditional bail, with specific conditions, including not contacting a named individual, Darren Slinger, either directly or indirectly. This bail condition is intended to prevent further offending ahead of the trial.
The plea and trial preparation hearing is scheduled for 24th September 2024 at Swansea Crown Court, located at The Law Courts, St. Helens Road, Swansea. The session, expected to last 30 minutes, will allow Benting to enter formal pleas on all charges and determine the next steps in the trial process.
The court has made no pre-sentence report (PSR) orders at this stage, and there has been no indication given regarding any victim personal statements. Benting’s trial will proceed under Section 51(1) and (2)(b) of the Crime and Disorder Act 1998.
