A LLANELLI man accused of serious sexual offences involving two complainants over several years remains in custody following a court hearing. Geoffrey Jones, 36, of Ynys Las, Llanelli, faces five charges, including assault by penetration, attempted rape, and three counts of rape—all of which he denies.
The charges stem from incidents alleged to have occurred between 2015 and 2019. The first charge involves an incident on Friday, August 28, 2015, where Jones is accused of assaulting a complainant by penetration with his fingers and attempting to rape her on the same day. The subsequent charges relate to alleged rapes involving another complainant on Sunday, December 31, 2017; Friday, August 31, 2018; and during a period between Sunday, July 14, and Wednesday, July 31, 2019.
An additional charge of controlling and coercive behaviour against one complainant was dropped ahead of the hearing.
Prosecution opposes bail
During the hearing, prosecutor Mr Scapins opposed Jones’s bail application, citing concerns about his past conduct and potential risks. He referred to an incident where Jones allegedly provided false information to Crimestoppers. Investigators found discrepancies in his account, including his denial of owning a mobile phone, which was later discovered in his possession.
The court also heard that Jones had previously breached bail conditions by posting information online about one of the complainants’ partners. The defence admitted this act was “foolish.”
Defence highlights personal circumstances
The defence argued that Jones’s stable personal circumstances warranted his release on bail. They stated that he is employed as a roofer and is in a committed relationship. His lawyer noted: “He was working as a roofer—I was told this but have not seen the correspondence. His previous employer has asked for him to return to work if he is granted bail. He has been employed there since June 2024.”
The defence added that Jones understood the importance of complying with any conditions imposed upon his release. It was also mentioned that Jones had already spent time in a sex offenders’ unit at Park Prison.
Judge adjourns decision
His Honour Judge Huw Rees adjourned the case for further review, stating: “Mr Jones, you will stay in custody while I gather all the facts.” The court is expected to reconvene on Monday to decide the matter.
