Pembrokeshire plasterer sentenced for driving whilst almost nine time over the legal drug limit

He was sentenced in Haverfordwest magistrates court

A self-employed plasterer has been ordered off the roads for 12 months after pleading guilty to a charge of driving his van whilst almost nine times over the legal drug-drive limit.

Hugh Kucyj, 46, was stopped by police officers on November 7 as he drove his Vauxhall Combo through Pembroke Ferry. A roadside drugs wipe proved positive and Kucyj was taken to the police station for further tests. These gave a reading of 17.5mcg of Delta-9 in his blood; the legal limit is 2.

Kucyj, of Brookside Avenue, Johnston pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared before Haverfordwest magistrates earlier this week. He was represented in court by Michael Kelleher.

“He’d walked to the garage to pick up his van after it had been repaired, and was stopped as he was driving it back,” he said.

“Things were getting on top of him as no money was coming in so, to relieve the stress, he took some cannabis. As a result, the future is very worrying for him.”

In addition to the 12-month disqualification, Kujyc was fined £250 and ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £100 surcharge.
