HUBBERSTON resident Millissa Fairbairn has launched a heartfelt GoFundMe campaign to support Barry, a 45-year-old devoted father, husband, and hardworking pipefitter, who has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, also known as ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). This devastating illness has not only robbed Barry of his ability to work but has profoundly impacted his family, including his youngest child, just 9 years old.
With a life expectancy of only two years, Barry’s diagnosis has left his family in urgent need of financial and emotional support. The funds raised through this campaign aim to explore clinical trials and treatments that could potentially extend Barry’s life. Donations will allow the family to buy essential aids, such as wheelchairs, mobility scooters, or home adaptations, to help Barry retain as much independence and dignity as possible
Motor Neurone Disease, or ALS, is a progressive neurological condition that affects the nerves in the brain and spinal cord, responsible for controlling voluntary muscles. As these nerves degenerate, they can no longer send signals to the muscles, leading to muscle weakness, and loss of function. Unfortunately, while treatments like Riluzole may help slow progression in some cases, there is currently no cure for ALS.
Barry’s symptoms began just months ago. Initially, he experienced restless leg syndrome. These signs soon escalated to leg weakness, hand tremors, and frequent falls that became impossible to ignore. Concerned, Barry sought medical advice and underwent an electromyography (EMG), followed by consultations with a neurologist. These confirmed the devastating diagnosis of ALS.
As a dedicated pipefitter, Barry has always been a provider for his family. The progression of his illness, however, has forced him to give up the work he loves. This not only brought financial strain but also left Barry feeling helpless and heartbroken. As a hands-on father, he is devastated that he can no longer support his family in the way he used to.
The GoFundMe campaign aims to raise £20,000 to support Barry and his family. The family is determined to research every possible option to prolong Barry’s life. As of now, £11,660 has been raised.
By contributing to this campaign, you can directly impact Barry’s quality of life and provide his family with much needed relief. Every donation on GoFundMe brings hope, helping Barry and his family during this difficult time.
Millissa stated “This diagnosis has been a devastating blow, but we are inspired by stories like Rob Burrow’s, which reminds us of the power of hope. If you can support us, whether by donating or sharing our story, it would mean the world to their family. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being part of this fight with us”.
