POPHAM KIDNEY SUPPORT, the Swansea-based kidney charity, is celebrating a remarkable milestone thanks to the fundraising efforts of Cwmtwrch Rugby Club. Every year, the club selects a charity to receive proceeds from its fundraisers. For 2024, the club chose Popham Kidney Support, a decision inspired by the charity’s vital work and its significance to the local community. The final fundraising total of £12,715.94 was recently confirmed, marking an exceptional contribution to the charity’s mission.
Fundraising efforts began in February, when rugby player Gareth grew out his beard for several months before “braving the shave” in June, raising £1,208. To follow, in March, a Six Nations raffle brought the community together, and in April, the club hosted a hypnotist night featuring a live band, providing a highly successful evening of entertainment and support.
In May, three nurses and club supporters – Sheree, Stacey, and Menna – completed a gruelling challenge by climbing Pen Y Fan ten times within 24 hours, raising £2,000. The momentum continued in July with participants walking 2,013 miles, symbolising the founding year of Popham Kidney Support, alongside a successful golf day event.
Later in the year, the fundraising calendar concluded with a spectacular fireworks night, marking a fitting finale to the club’s efforts. The chosen charity has a deeply personal link to Cwmtwrch RFC, as several members live with kidney disease, including Jaz Howells, Eddie Phillips, and Andy Williams. Neil Amber, who received a kidney transplant in 2009 after 30 years of illness, now volunteers as a peer mentor for Popham Kidney Support, offering guidance to newly diagnosed patients. Rugby player Steve Smith, who underwent a life-saving transplant from his close friend Kael Ace, is also a passionate advocate, raising awareness and supporting others facing similar challenges.
Joanne Popham, CEO of Popham Kidney Support, said: “We are truly moved by the dedication of Cwmtwrch Rugby Club. Over the course of the year, their unwavering support has raised an incredible total, which will have a profound impact on those living with kidney disease. The personal connection many club members have to our charity makes this achievement even more meaningful, and we are deeply grateful for their commitment”
Tracy Simmons, a representative of Cwmtwrch Rugby Club, said: “It’s been a deeply personal and rewarding journey for our club to support Popham Kidney Support this year, the fundraising total is a testament to the passion, dedication, and unity of our members and community. Knowing the funds will directly benefit individuals in need, including our own members, makes this partnership even more special.”
