MID and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews from Amman Valley, Ammanford, Port Talbot and Pontardawe fire stations were called to an incident in Garnant at 7.16pm on Monday (Aug 26).
Crews responded to a fire within a five-storey derelict property measuring approximately 25m x 60m. Crews utilised two hose reel jets, one 45mm jet, small gear, one 10m ladder, two thermal imaging cameras and one water bowser to extinguish the fire.
Due to the building being insecure, the Wales Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Team was also in attendance to secure the building. Crews left the scene at 10.58pm.
The fire service said that they believe that this fire was started deliberately.
They said: “Arson is a serious criminal offence which can potentially cause large-scale damage and even loss of life. Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service has a variety of arson reduction and fire setting prevention programmes to protect the communities it serves.”
