SIGNIFICANT improvements are planned at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bryn Tawe and Gowerton School, while a brand new special school for pupils with additional learning needs is also included in the next phase of the Band B programme.

The planned new special school is subject to a statutory consultation process.

Work is also progressing to consider options for the former Daniel James site in Mynydd-Bach.

The update is included in a report going before Swansea Council’s Cabinet next week.

Swansea Council and the Welsh Government have invested record sums in school infrastructure in the city during the last decade.

Recent projects that have been completed include brand new builds for YGG Tan-y-lan and YGG Tirdeunaw, new extensions and refurbishment at Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr and Bishopston Comprehensive School and a brand new school, known as Maes Derw, for the some of the city’s most vulnerable learners.

Since the Band B programme was first announced there have been significant inflationary pressures and cabinet is being asked to approve an additional £9m in principle towards future projects.

Cabinet members are being asked endorse this increase that would take the combined investment in the programme to more than £176m, subject to Welsh Government approval.

Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Learning, Robert Smith, said: “Many thousands of pupils along with staff are now benefitting from the record investment that is being made in school infrastructure in Swansea.

“We are determined to give pupils across Swansea the very best facilities and surroundings so they can reach their full potential and are working on plans to invest in more schools.
