A NEW charity shop has opened in Swansea in support of the UK’s leading end of life charity Marie Curie.
The shop, on The Kingsway, is the first new Marie Curie shop to open in Wales in 11 years and officially opened to the public today (Friday, November 22).
The shop will sell a range of pre-loved clothing, footwear and accessories, as well as toys and homewares.
Joining the team for the grand opening was Marie Curie Nurse, Lynne Phillips, who leads the Swansea Bay Hospice Care at Home team.
Marie Curie Senior Nurse, Lynne, said: “Our generous supporters who donate goods, time and money to Marie Curie are vital to ensuring we can provide care and support to dying people across the Swansea Bay area, where we offer our Hospice at Home service, our specialist dementia support from both healthcare professionals and volunteers and our information and support line.
“We recently supported a gentleman named David from a close-knit community in Swansea.
“David was living with a terminal illness and wished to remain at home, surrounded by the people and memories he cherished the most.
“Thanks to the support of people donating to stores like this we were able to provide him with personalised care, including pain management, emotional support, and guidance for his family through such a challenging time.
“The care not only enhanced his quality of life but also allowed him to find peace in his final days at home. The support ensures that stories like Davids’s remain at the heart of what we do, helping us to bring compassionate care to more individuals and families across Wales. Thank you for being a vital part of this mission.”
All the profits from the shop will help Marie Curie continue to provide expert care and support for people at the end of life, free from unnecessary pain, with the dignity and respect they deserve, whatever their illness or where they live.
Adam Robinson, Retail District Manager for Marie Curie, said: “We’re very excited to have opened our first new shop in Wales for over a decade, and we’re looking forward to welcoming the wonderful people of Swansea in the coming days, weeks and months.
“Our shops rely on generous donations from the public, and we will be extremely grateful to receive good quality donations from the local community and surrounding areas to help us get up and running.
“We’re delighted that Nurse Lynne joined us to mark our opening and was able to chat to our staff and volunteers during the morning about what the funds raised from the shop mean for our services out in the local community.”
Volunteers are needed to help with sorting donations and sales at the shop and anyone interested can pop in or visit the Marie Curie website to find out more.
