Visitors to Fendrod Lake in Swansea reported feeling unwell after a strong chemical odour was detected in the area, prompting an investigation by authorities. The smell, which some likened to “paint thinners,” was first noticed by walkers on Saturday, December 28, at around 4pm.
Several individuals described symptoms including dizziness, sore throats, sharp pains, and headaches after being near the lake. One walker, who wished to remain anonymous, said the odour was most intense near the lock bridge and seemed to coincide with a visible “slick” in the water. She said: “People were lightheaded, dizzy, and had sore throats. It smelt like paint thinners. It was in a specific area around the little bridge. Some people were saying they could see a slick in the water. The fire brigade were very quick to respond.”
Firefighters attended the scene and quickly referred the matter to Natural Resources Wales (NRW). Ioan Williams, operations manager for NRW, confirmed that investigations were underway. Speaking on Sunday, Mr Williams said: “We received reports of a strong odour at Fendrod Lake, Swansea, on Saturday evening and sent officers to investigate. Staff have returned to site this morning to determine the source of the odour.”
Fendrod Lake, a popular spot for walkers and nature enthusiasts, remained under scrutiny as NRW continued their efforts to identify the cause of the disturbance. Further updates are expected as investigations progress.
