Swansea hosts spectacular winter procession

HUNDREDS of locals gathered in Swansea city centre to enjoy the annual winter procession, a festive highlight that brings the community together as Christmas draws near.

Families from all walks of life lined the streets to watch the lively parade, featuring participants in a dazzling array of costumes celebrating the holiday spirit.

This year’s procession kicked off at 5:00pm on Sunday, led by soldiers and Morris dancers drumming through the streets. The lively rhythm set the stage for a colourful display of creativity, with participants dressed as elves, angels, Disney characters, princes, princesses, and even dragons delighting onlookers.

The spectacle didn’t stop there—many locals crafted intricate costumes and towering paper structures using tissue paper, glue, and wooden frames. These illuminated creations, including a glowing paper dragon, reindeer, and oversized Christmas present boxes, lit up the streets with warm, festive hues.

The procession featured floats decorated with winter wonderland scenes, including characters like the Snow Queen and The Grinch. The parade concluded near the iconic Dragon Hotel, close to the city’s bustling shopping district and the grand Christmas tree installation.

The creative efforts of children, teenagers, and adults transformed the event into a memorable celebration of the season, with families sipping hot cocoa or soup as they enjoyed the heartwarming display.

Adding to the festive cheer, local children could be seen playing with sparkling toys and glow sticks, a charming reminder of simpler joys in today’s digital world.

For those attending the event, nearby churches offered free meals after their Sunday services. Mount Pleasant Baptist Church hosted a special Christmas carol service, where guests with food tokens were treated to a delicious meal prepared by the church committee. Each week features a different menu inspired by global cuisine, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking community warmth and a hearty meal.

The winter procession brought a joyful and creative celebration to Swansea, uniting the city in a festive spirit and spreading Christmas cheer to all.
